Friday, November 22 was an unforgettable day for the students of Italian at Bates Middle (AACPS), Germantown Elementary (AACPS), Roosevelt and Northwestern High Schools (PGCPS). On this special day, the 340 students present that day had the opportunity to meet Colonel Roberto Vittori, an Italian Astronaut born in Viterbo (Italy). The event was sponsored by the Education Office of the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. 
Colonel Vittori, who is also an Italian Air Force officer and pilot, arrived at Bates at around 10:50am in his red car. He got out his car and grabbed his flight jacket and was escorted to Maryland Hall by Ms. Sileoni (lead Italian instructor at Bates Middle) where he began his mini-conference at 11:05 am sharp. Students were captivated by him. They clapped their hands, cheered, “wowed” and laughed with him during the presentation. 
The Colonel spoke about the origins of flight, the differences between atmospheric flight and space flight, the space shuttle, the space laboratory, the international space station, and the future of manned space exploration. Did you know, for example, that it only takes 8 minutes to get into space? Obviously you need a space shuttle! 
The mini-conference ended with autographs, pictures, and Italian flags all around as souvenirs to remember this “spatial” experience. A big thank you goes to Dr. LuciaDalla Montà (Director of studies at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C.), Mr. DeRoo (Principal at Bates Middle), all the assistant principals at Bates, the tech staff at Maryland Hall, and all the teachers and chaperones that made this event a total and… out of space success!

Il 22 novembre è stata una giornata indimenticabile per gli studenti della scuola media di Bates e della scuola elementare di Germantown (entrambe nella contea di AACPS) e per gli studenti delle scuole medie superiori di Roosevelt e Northwestern (PGCPS). In questo giorno speciale, i 340 studenti presenti hanno avuto l’opportunità di incontrare il Colonnello Roberto Vittori, un astronauta italiano nato a Viterbo. L'evento è stato sponsorizzato dall'ufficio studi dell'Ambasciata Italiana di Washington D.C.).
Il Colonnello, un pilota dell'Aereonautica italiana, è arrivato alla scuola Bates alle 10:50 circa del mattino. È uscito dalla sua macchina rossa afferrando il suo giubbetto da pilota ed è stato accompagnato dalla Professoressa Sileoni (l’insegnante d’italiano principale a Bates) presso il teatro Maryland Hall. La mini-conferenza è iniziata puntuale alle 11:05. Gli studenti sono stati accattivati dalla presenza del Colonnello: hanno battuto le mani a tempo, hanno esultato e riso con lui durante la presentazione. Il Colonnello ha parlato dell’origine del volo, volare nell’atmosfera e nello spazio, accedere nello spazio, lo shuttle e il futuro, il laboratorio spaziale e la stazione internazionale nello spazio. Lo sapevate che ci vogliono solo 8 minuti per raggiungere lo spazio? Chiaramente si ha bisogno di uno space shuttle! La mini-conferenza si è conclusa con autografi, foto e bandiere italiane per immortalare nel tempo questa esperienza “spaziale”. Un grande “grazie” va alla Dottoressa Lucia Dalla Montà (Direttrice agli studi dell’Ambasciata Italiana di Washington D.C.), il Signor DeRoo (Preside di Bates), tutti i vice-presidi, i tecnici di Maryland Hall, gli insegnanti e i genitori che hanno reso questo evento un successo incredibile e… “fuori dalle orbite”!
